Icelandic Sheep
Icelandic Sheep
Late in the fall of 2018, we brought home 3 Icelandic Ewes. This was the breed of sheep we were looking for. Icelandic sheep are one of the oldest domestic breeds of sheep. They were brought to Iceland by the Vikings in the 1100’s. This breed has remained genetically unchanged and was recently imported to the United States. It is a triple-purpose breed that is good for wool, dairy, and meat.
Rams
That winter, we purchased 2 rams to breed with our ewes. Here are Thor & Loki.
Lambs
Breeding was a success! This summer, we were blessed with 2 moorit ram lambs and 1 white ewe lamb.
We have learned many skills in our short time of raising Icelandic Sheep. Health care, trimming hoofs, shearing by hand, and lambing to name a few. We look forward to sharing more articles about them in the future.
If you are considering raising or currently raise Icelandic Sheep, there is a wonderful Facebook Group that I have found to be extremely helpful. It is Icelandic Sheep Owners.
