Ideas for Planning and Celebrating an Old-Fashioned Tradition Filled Christmas
Every year I wonder how on earth Christmas turned into such a chaotic stressful time. I have all these good-intentioned holiday plans that fill up the month of December and make me run around with my head cut off. You get caught into doing it all and want to make everyone happy. Worry fills your brain as you wonder if you spent enough on your loved ones. Guilt plagues you and before you know it you are going into debt buying WAY too much. This is not what Christmas should be about! We need to go back to our roots and have a good old fashioned Christmas.
Going into this Christmas season, I want to be intentional and simplify. I want to have a good old-fashioned Christmas like they used to. It wasn’t about gathering the best presents, having the prettiest Christmas decorations, or making the most Christmas cookies. It was about love, spreading joy, and enjoying family and friends. Giving what you can, spending those precious moments with those we care about and sharing the birth of Our Saviour.
Christmas was not always this way. We need to plan out our Christmas to be intentional and focus on our traditions to change it. We need to go back to the Old Fashioned Christmas!
Plan out your Old Fashion Traditional Christmas
Coming into the holidays I am going to prioritize, simplify, learn about my heritage, remember my loved ones whom we have lost, and get back to the roots of what Christmas is about. Old Fashioned for me means to cut out the extras. Old Fashioned for you may be completely different. That is the joy of Christmas. It is different for everyone and
I am going to be sharing some of our Christmas Traditions and how we are simplifying and focusing our attention on the things that matter to us.

How do you envision your Christmas Season?
Close your eyes and envision your perfect Christmas Season. How do you want it to feel for you and your family? Think about your seasonal priorities? What traditions do you want to accomplish? What do you want to focus on this year?
Make a list of everything you would like to do this Christmas
What Christmas activities would you like to do this season? Write them all down! What do you normally do, what do you wish to fit in, etc. This is your brainstorming session.
Don’t stress out about getting it all done yet. This is just the first part.

Keep Traditions alive this Christmas
Remember Your Own Christmas Past
It was not that long ago that we were children ourselves (yes, I mean it for everyone- time goes by so quickly). What do you remember from your own Christmas? What is a Christmas Tradition you always did as a child? Do you have a favorite Holiday memory? Share those memories and traditions and pass them onto the next generation! I believe that most people have had some kind of traditions brought through to their holiday season which they like and wish to continue.
If you have Christmas decorations from family members, bring them out, decorate with them while sharing stories and memories of them. Explain to your family how and where you got the items. These are the stories your children will remember and pass down.
Remember Your heritage
This may go hand in hand with remembering your own Christmas past. My family has several things that they continue to do on the Holidays that come from our heritage. I am of Scandinavian, Irish, and German descent and consider myself lucky because my family has continued to do a whole slew of Christmas traditions that I may or may not like. Oyster stew on Christmas (kids have pizza), Rosette cookie making, and hiding the pickle on the Christmas tree. Your family may not be the same way and I think that continuing to do some of these old-fashioned heritage traditions is beneficial.
Our family LOVES Kiwi Co. Subscription boxes. They make a great gift. Read my honest review of them here.
What kind of new traditions would you like to add or try out?
Traditional recipes, old-time decorations, songs, and activities. Those are just a few of the things you can research to get to know where your family came from and try out a few things that may have been forgotten over the years. Ask your grandparents, aunts and uncles, and older people in your community what they used to do. Hear the stories of their past and get inspired to try a few new things.
Prioritize the things on your list & Cut Out what does not fit with your Vision
Now that you have all your grand plans for the season, it is time for the hard part – prioritizing and cutting out what does not fit in with your vision. What is going to cause the most stress for what it is Christmas season? What can you not feasibly fit into the month? You need to simplify and prioritize. Be intentional and focus on what is really important to you!
For us, Christmas is a time to keep traditions from our childhood, learn about our heritage, have fun together, and focus on the birth of Jesus.
Your priorities may be completely different and that is the beauty of it. Now is the time to create your very own intentional, Old-Fashioned Tradition Filled Christmas!

What are your favorite Christmas Traditions?
My husband and I have always loved to learn about the past and try new things. We have roasted chestnuts, made mincemeat pie, and learned to sing silent night in German. It is always fun for us to try and do something different.
Next up, we will be sharing how we Throw a Christmas Decorating Party, Decorating With Nature, and How To Make Old-Fashioned Popcorn Garland with Dried Oranges & Cranberries. This is a fun tradition that takes a big, time-consuming, stressful job and turns it into a party that everyone looks forward to. It is one of our favorite Christmas Traditions!
